In 2023, Corinthians reached the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil, after losing the final in 2022 to Flamengo. On that occasion, Timão faced São Paulo and ended up being eliminated with a defeat at Morumbi, even after winning the first leg. The scorer of the goals for the black-and-white team, Renato Augusto, recalled the decision in an interview with Meu Timão.

“Anyone who lives at Corinthians knows you couldn't lose to São Paulo at home for the first time. The team had Cássio, Fábio (Santos), Gil… although some were more experienced, they hadn't been at the club for long. Giuliano had been there for one or two years, but still, with a lot of history, you could be the first to lose at the Arena. And in football, one day you win and another day you lose, it's natural”, said the former number 8.

“That game had an extra meaning for us. The two goals I scored were very memorable. We treated that match as a final: the obstacle was huge, the stadium was full, everything contributed. Even today, when I watch the video, I get goosebumps. I shouted with emotion, it was something that came naturally, due to the significance of the moment. The match was already huge, and every detail only increased the intensity of the game. My ‘I love you’ came out naturally at that moment”, he recalled.

In that decision, Corinthians ended up losing Róger Guedes along the way, complicating the club's performance. According to Renato, the players already knew about the probable departure of the former number 10. As a result, Yuri Alberto became the protagonist in Timão's attack.

“Speaking directly, we were trying to hold the goal, understanding the opponent's pressure. Lucas started the game flying, the crowd was packed, the pressure was enormous. The goal at that moment was not to lose the game, especially the first half. The first goal, if I'm not mistaken, was by Rato, and these things happen.”, he said.

“In Yuri's case, some people thought he and another player together might get in each other's way, but in my view, it didn't bother anyone. Everyone has an opinion, but the important thing is to give space and support. Performance fluctuation is natural: Guedes himself fluctuated, and other players will go through this too. Patience and support are needed because they can return to playing well. Later, Yuri took on an important role and followed his path. But really, losing Guedes at that moment was difficult”, commented Renato.

That was Renato Augusto's last season as a Corinthians player, with his contract terminated by the management, without renewal, which gave him the chance to move to Fluminense. There, he managed to play a little and decided to retire this year, ending his career as a football player.
