Renato Gaúcho agrees Vasco deal to 2026, Pedrinho’s fourth Brazilian coach | OneFootball

Vasco have agreed a deal to appoint Renato Gaúcho on a contract through to the end of 2026, making him the fourth Brazilian coach hired under president Pedrinho.

According to PaponaColina, the paperwork is being completed before an official announcement, a contract length the coach typically accepts when taking charge mid-season.

The move contrasts with Rio rivals, with Fluminense, Botafogo and Flamengo set to have foreign coaches for the rest of 2026. Fluminense are led by Argentine Luis Zubeldía, while Botafogo are coached by compatriot Martín Anselmi, following a run that also featured Artur Jorge, Renato Paiva and Davide Ancelotti.

Flamengo reinforced the trend on Tuesday by dismissing Brazilian Filipe Luís to hire Portuguese Leonardo Jardim. They also turned abroad in 2023 with Vitor Pereira and Jorge Sampaoli. The split leaves Vasco as the only one of Rio’s big clubs under homegrown management.

Renato, alongside assistants Marcelo Salles and Alexandre Mendes, is tasked with lifting Vasco out of the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone. His first game is on 12, an opener against Palmeiras. He must also contend with recent instability and short managerial stints.

Under Pedrinho, average tenure sits at about five months, exactly 150 days per coach. The ledger lists Rafael Paiva on 156 days, Fábio Carille 129 and Fernando Diniz 287, plus Portuguese Álvaro Pacheco, the sole foreign hire. Brought in by Pedro Martins and Lúcio Barbosa during the 777 period, Pacheco was dismissed in June after three league defeats, including a 6-1 to Flamengo, having lasted 29 days.
