Renato Gaúcho rejected two offers from Vasco on Monday, remaining open to the project but with a 10% to 20% salary gap. According to Globo.com, the 63-year-old has yet to agree pay.

Even so, the board plan to push a little longer, judging alternatives poor value compared with him.

He has been firm in talks, seeking sums close to his Fluminense wage. The board are not fully convinced, but little time to find a successor and a training window, with Vasco not back until 12 against Palmeiras, could shift their view.

His name surfaced hours after Fernando Diniz was sacked last week, though a bid was delayed by a pursuit of Artur Jorge. With prising the Portuguese from Al-Rayyan proving difficult, and after elimination by Fluminense in the Carioca semi-finals on Sunday, Renato moved back to the front.

Based in Rio de Janeiro, he had responded positively to the initial approach and the club knew he wanted to return to work. He resigned from Fluminense in September last year amid external pressure.

Internally he fits the brief, strong in the dressing room and able to refresh players quickly. Football staff feel the squad has gaps yet quality and is underperforming, so priority is a coach to draw more through new ideas.

The start has been poor. Beyond the Carioca exit, the team are bottom of the Brasileirão with one point from four rounds, with one draw and three defeats.
