Renato Gaúcho was unveiled as Vasco head coach and used his first press conference to highlight Flamengo’s financial power and the wider shortage of decisive players in Brazil.
According to Coluna Do Fla, he named Palmeiras, Flamengo and Cruzeiro as clubs with strong finances who can target above-average signings, adding that many Brazilian sides need match-winning attackers.
He said it was not only about Vasco, vowed to work hard with the current squad, and framed scoring as the priority. He called the shortage a national issue, sometimes evident even with the Brazil team, and said training must sharpen that edge.
This is not the first time he has referenced Flamengo’s budget. While at Grêmio, he remarked that with the sums Flamengo were investing he would accept being judged on attractive football.
In 2021 he then took charge of Flamengo’s expensively assembled team, but did not win trophies.
Gaúcho has joined Vasco on a deal running until December this year. The agreement carries no penalty clause, so if the club ends the contract early it would not incur extra cost.
Meanwhile, Flamengo are close to appointing a new coach. Leonardo Jardim has visited the Ninho do Urubu training centre, with the move expected to be formalised by the end of the week, and his debut should come in the clássico against Fluminense in the Carioca final.
