Renato Gaúcho’s position at Vasco is under threat, with the board debating whether to dismiss the head coach amid player discontent.
According to Globo.com, sections of the squad have bristled at recent press conference criticism of the group, with remarks about Colombian players before the World Cup break already causing friction with Marino Hinestroza.
More players have since been irked as those criticisms widened to the bench and a perceived lack of options. There is unease at São Januário over how Renato has handled the issues.
After the Barracas Central game on the 27th, he said the squad was reduced and that he had arrived with the team on one point in the Brasileirão with little time to work. He argued the table can shift with one or two wins, accepted peaceful fan protests, and urged supporters to attend on Sunday at São Januário for a difficult league match.
Renato was appointed on the third of March, having been among Pedrinho’s preferred candidates. Neither he nor his staff have been notified of any planned meeting to define his future and the plans for the second half of the year.
Vasco have not yet returned to training at CT Moacyr Barbosa. A meeting between the board and coaching staff is expected in the coming days, potentially before training restarts on Monday 22.
The next fixture is in five weeks away to Vitória in the Brasileirão, where the club are in the relegation zone in 17th with 20 points.
