Renato Gaúcho has begun work as Vasco head coach, with his side to face Palmeiras at São Januário next Thursday in the 5th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The 63-year-old has little time to settle.

According to Globo.com, his opening day at CT Moacyr Barbosa was dominated by meetings. He arrived in the morning to meet Pedrinho, director of football Admar Lopes and technical director Felipe Loureiro to discuss the squad and season plan.

Initial discussions centred on players already at the club, with profiles presented and Renato sharing his assessment. He already knew Cuiabano, Léo Jardim, Hugo Moura and Matheus França from previous roles.

The hierarchy intend to recruit a defensive midfielder, though talks over reinforcements have not advanced. That need was identified during Fernando Diniz’s tenure and remains on the agenda.

Renato said his work starts now and the page has turned, while he respects Diniz and his methods. He added he will not start from scratch, plans to reuse what works and, with his staff, aims to lift Vasco off the bottom of the table.

He introduced himself to the players in the gym alongside Pedrinho, with both underlining the squad’s quality and the goal of a league recovery. On the grass, the group underwent physical tests and ball work.

On Thursday, in addition to regular on-pitch activities, he will convey ideas via video, a staple of his approach. The first more tactically focused session is expected on Friday, which would give Vasco six days of fully focused preparation before that fixture.
