Renato, now Vasco head coach, faces Grêmio at São Januário on Sunday at 16:00 Brasília time, with a positive record against them.
According to Globo.com, Sunday carries special significance for him given his ties to the Porto Alegre club. As a coach he has five wins, three draws and three defeats from 11 meetings between 2003 and 2025. All came while leading Rio clubs, and this is his third as Vasco boss.
He oversaw Vasco’s last away win over Grêmio, a 2-1 comeback at the old Olímpico in the 2006 Brasileirão. Patrício scored a penalty after a Yves handball inside two minutes. Éder headed in from a Ramon Menezes free-kick, then Alberoni’s cross deflected off Pereira to beat Gallatto.
His only São Januário meeting as a rival coach ended 1-1 on 9 September 2006, his 44th birthday, with tributes from visiting fans. Lucas Leiva struck on 31 minutes from distance. Andrade levelled before the break with a fierce free-kick.
In 2019 Grêmio unveiled a bronze statue of Renato, more than four metres tall, outside their arena. He is the club’s most-used coach with 542 matches across four spells, winning the Copa do Brasil, Libertadores, Recopa Sudamericana, five state titles and two Recopas Gaúchas.
His 2016 to 2021 stint was the club’s longest since 2003, spanning four and a half years, 326 games and seven trophies, including the 2016 Copa do Brasil and 2017 Libertadores.
