At Fluminense he has had seven separate stints, in 1996, 2002-03, 2003, 2007-08, 2009, 2014 and 2025. He also delivered a 16-month stretch in 2007-08, the club’s fourth-longest in the points-based era, winning the Copa do Brasil in his first year and finishing runners-up in the Copa Libertadores the next season.

In his most recent spell, he took charge on 3 April last year and stayed until September. Across 42 matches the record read 21 wins, nine draws and 12 defeats. When he left, the team were eighth in the Brasileirão, having reached the Club World Cup and Copa do Brasil semi-finals.

The bond with Grêmio is stronger still. Already a playing icon, he added to that status as coach, earning a bronze statue in 2019, more than four metres tall, on the Arena do Grêmio esplanade. He is the coach with the most matches in the club’s history, 542 across four spells, with titles including the Copa do Brasil, the Copa Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana, five state titles and two Recopa Gaúcha.

His third stint, from 2016 to 2021, is the club’s longest coaching tenure since 2003, spanning four and a half years, 326 matches and seven trophies, including the 2016 Copa do Brasil and the 2017 Libertadores. Grêmio visit São Januário on Sunday at 16:00 Brasília time, in the eighth round of the Brasileirão.
