Rennes fell 3-1 at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium for Ligue 1 gameweek 30 on Sunday. The visitors had led early on thanks to former Lyon youth product Amine Gouiri. However, Lyon turned the game on its head with goals from Corentin Tolisso, Alexandre Lacazette and Bradley Barcola. Les Rouge et Noir missed the opportunity to leapfrog Lille, who suffered a shock 1-0 loss on Saturday against bottom boys Angers, in the fight for fifth place.
Nothing really went Rennes’ way on Sunday, and the visitors’ head boss Bruno Genesio had no patience with his underperforming players. Promising attacking midfielder Désiré Doué (17) had replaced struggling Croatian Lovro Majer at the 70th minute mark. However, Doué was recalled back to the bench 18 minutes later. Genesio gave a seething assessment of Doué when speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport. “There are some things that need to be assimilated quickly“, Genesio said. “When you say it once, it’s normal. Twice, it’s one time too many. When it’s more, you need to make use of other methods.“
Genesio assessed that he would speak privately to his young player about what went wrong during his 18-minutes cameo. “It does not mean I don’t have great trust in him and that he’ll fail to make a great career, but some things need to be understood faster“, Genesio added.
