Renzo Saravia is moving closer to Carlos Corberán’s plans at Valencia as he adapts on the fly to a league he has never played in after a spell without competitive action. According to Superdeporte, the Argentine right-back could be named in the squad to face Deportivo Alavés.

The former Atlético Mineiro defender arrived in Paterna a little under two weeks ago and initially worked apart on a tailored programme to assess his fitness and integration, so he was left out against Osasuna.

This week he has trained with the group, increasing his workload and working normally. He is not yet at 100 per cent, but his short-term deal and Valencia’s shortage in this role are speeding up his readiness.

Even if included, a starting spot looks unlikely. It would mark the first step towards becoming an option for Corberán, who has only Thierry carrying a knock at right-back, along with the emergency option of Unai Núñez, which alters the centre of defence.

With Foulquier’s serious injury prompting a move outside the winter window, Saravia’s countdown to joining Valencia’s travelling party is under way and his name is entering the debate over the position that has caused most problems this season.
