AC Milan move early for Niclas Füllkrug as West Ham talks open

AC Milan have taken decisive steps in the January market, with Calciomercato reporting that a basic agreement has already been reached with Niclas Füllkrug. Attention now turns to West Ham, where negotiations are ongoing to determine whether the German striker’s difficult London chapter can be brought to an early close.

Following a strategic meeting at Casa Milan involving Massimiliano Allegri, Geoffrey Moncada, Igli Tare and Giorgio Furlani, the Rossoneri clarified priorities and recruitment targets. According to Calciomercato, the outcome was clear, with Füllkrug emerging as Milan’s preferred option to lead the line.

Strategic reset at Casa Milan

The report states that “AC Milan is accelerating the transfer market following last week’s meeting at Casa Milan between Allegri, Moncada, Tare, and Furlani, after which the roles to be addressed and the priorities were outlined.” That clarity has allowed Tare to move swiftly, identifying a striker profile that fits Allegri’s tactical demands and short term objectives.

Füllkrug’s pedigree is not in question. His “very successful past at Borussia Dortmund” contrasts sharply with what Calciomercato describe as “a sad present at West Ham.” Limited minutes, an unsettled role and a lack of continuity have contributed to a swift desire for change.

Contract agreement reached with player

Crucially, Milan have already done groundwork on the player side. Calciomercato report that “in recent days, Tare has intensified contact with the international agency Roof, reaching a basic agreement on the terms and duration of Niclas Füllkrug’s contract.” Financially, Milan are prepared to act, with the club set to cover “the €1.5 million the German striker is expected to earn until the end of the season under his contract with West Ham.”

Perhaps most telling is the player’s own stance. The article notes that “the 1993-born player has asked his representatives to put all other options on hold to continue with the Rossoneri.” That level of commitment often accelerates talks between clubs.

Loan formula discussions with West Ham

West Ham now hold the key. Milan’s proposal centres on “a loan deal until the end of the season,” aligning with Allegri’s wish for “a physically strong penalty area striker who can work with his back to goal for the team, with significant international experience.”

From Milan’s perspective, the logic is sound. From West Ham’s, the decision will hinge on squad balance, financial offsets and whether allowing a January exit represents an admission that the experiment has failed.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a West Ham supporter’s standpoint, this report lands with a mixture of frustration and weary acceptance. Füllkrug arrived with reputation and promise, yet never truly settled into the rhythm of the Premier League.

There is a sense that both club and player misjudged the fit. West Ham’s attacking structure has often demanded mobility and pressing from the front, while Füllkrug thrives when service is consistent and the system plays to his strengths. If Milan are offering a clear tactical role and covering wages, it becomes difficult to argue against a loan exit.

Supporters will question recruitment planning. Allowing a senior striker to depart in January raises concerns about depth, particularly with a congested fixture list. Yet there is also realism. Keeping an unhappy player rarely benefits anyone, and freeing salary space could open doors for reinforcements better suited to the manager’s vision.
