New York Red Bulls are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner.

This is according to Foot Mercato who report the Spurs attacker is “in talks” over a transfer to the MLS side.

Tottenham signed Werner on loan in the 2024 winter transfer window. He impressed with his performances, and the club extended his spell for a season-long loan with an option to buy for £8.5 million.

However, the 28-year-old has failed to meet expectations this season, offering nothing in the final third. In 26 appearances across all competitions, the German has netted just one goal and set up three.

Werner came under some heavy criticism from manager Ange Postecoglou after a particularly poor performance in 1-1 draw with Rangers in December.

“When you’ve got 18-year-olds, it’s not acceptable to me,” Postecoglou said (per The Athletic).

“I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international, he’s a Germany international. In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable.”

Werner will be eager to bring his Premier League nightmare to an end, but Spurs may not be willing to terminate his loan without bringing in a replacement first.

The Germany international is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury he sustained in the FA Cup victory over Tamworth.

He missed the league matches against Arsenal and Everton, and will also sit out in Sunday’s home game with Leicester City.

Tottenham have been enduring a huge injury crisis this season. Dominic Solanke became the latest victim after he picked up a knee injury in training, ruling him out for around six weeks.

The 27-year-old has joined Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert in the well-occupied infirmary.

Meanwhile, Djed Spence, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are also doubts for Spurs ahead of Leicester’s visit on Sunday.
