Gabriel Jesus has always carried an air of electricity in his movement, a striker who blends industry with invention, yet Arsenal supporters have watched his progress stall as injuries bit deep. His latest comments about his long term future mark a significant moment, which was reported by The Daily Mirror in what has been a stop start North London chapter, and they deserve proper reflection.
The Brazilian has been honest about his ambition to one day return to Palmeiras, the club that nurtured him and launched his career. His admission was clear and heartfelt. “I’ve never had contact with another club, and my desire, as I say, is to return to Palmeiras, and Palmeiras’ desire is for me to return to Palmeiras.” Those are the words of a player thinking beyond the immediate horizon but not quite at the exit door.

He followed it by adding, “When I feel it’s time to return to Palmeiras, I’ll decide that with Arsenal, but we’re talking about a player who’s been out for nine months and is now fighting to get back into the team, and there are journalists who are talking without any basis whatsoever.” It was a firm message, a reminder that speculation often drifts ahead of reality.
Mikel Arteta has never hidden his admiration for Jesus and responded with warmth and conviction. “[He is] a player that is very unpredictable, full of energy, super competitive, a player that comes from a context of difficulty in the last few seasons for various nasty injuries.” Arteta recognises the chaos Jesus can cause in a defensive line, the hunger that remains untouched by setbacks.
The manager continued, “So the level of hunger and desire that he’s going to bring to the team is going to be amazing.” That confidence was backed by further praise. “So I’m thrilled to have him, I think he’s going to add something extra to the team that we don’t have and make sure that very soon we see him on that pitch making an impact for the team.”
Arsenal’s forward department has been stretched thin with injuries to Viktor, Kai and others. Arteta made that point plainly. “We haven’t had them all fit and now we don’t have Viktor, and we haven’t had Kai again for three months or many forwards, and unfortunately that’s becoming something that consistently is happening. So we need those options, and what an option to have with Gabi.”
That context matters because it reinforces why Arsenal will not entertain Everton or any other Premier League rival attempting to prise him away. Jesus, with 26 goals in 96 appearances for the Gunners, still has a role to play as they chase major honours.
From the perspective of an excited Premier League fan, this story carries a mix of intrigue and anticipation. Jesus speaking openly about his desire to return to Palmeiras feels honest rather than provocative, the sort of clarity supporters often say they want from players. Yet it naturally sparks questions. When a striker talks about a long term exit, even a distant one, it invites debate about where his motivation lies right now.
Supporters will look at his time out of the side and wonder how quickly he can return to rhythm. Arsenal need goals and mobility, and Jesus at full throttle gives them both. The frustration is that his fitness record has prevented fans from enjoying him at his highest level for long stretches. Hearing Arteta speak so passionately about his qualities will reassure many, especially given the injury issues across the frontline.
There is also curiosity about what happens if he rediscovers his form. If Jesus hits a run of performances, the same supporters who worry today will be chanting his name again tomorrow. Football turns quickly, especially for a forward whose energy and flair can light up a match. For now though, fans are expectant rather than concerned, eager to see whether this renewed hunger transforms Arsenal’s attack in the months ahead.
