Arsenal Transfers: Nico Williams Back on Radar After Double Setback

Arsenal are back where they have been before, circling Nico Williams and weighing up whether this is finally the summer to act. According to TeamTalk, the Gunners have “made fresh contact” over the Athletic Club winger after two other attacking pursuits ran into trouble.

That matters because this has become a pattern in Arsenal’s transfer work. They identify elite attacking talent, they explore, they calculate, and then the market moves. This time, the report says Arsenal are reacting to disappointment over Morgan Rogers and growing doubt around Bradley Barcola. The result is simple, Williams is “once again firmly back on their shortlist”.

For Arsenal, that is expensive but not prohibitive. If they truly believe left wing is one of the final missing pieces for Mikel Arteta’s front line, then £77m is a fee they can meet.

Double setback shapes Arsenal transfer plan

The timing is no coincidence. Arsenal have “reassessing their options after missing out on Morgan Rogers”, while “uncertainty continues to surround another long-standing target in Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.” In other words, two preferred routes have become complicated, so they are reopening another file.

That can sound reactive, because it is. But reactive does not automatically mean wrong. Good recruitment departments keep multiple tracks alive. If Williams was always admired, then returning to him after setbacks elsewhere is logical.

The report also points to Berta’s view that Williams “could provide the pace, directness and creativity Arsenal have been searching for on the left flank”. Again, no need to overcomplicate it. Arsenal need more punch in wide areas. Too often their attack has become structured, controlled and a bit predictable. Williams brings chaos, and top defences hate chaos.

Williams heads into this summer with fresh international credibility. TeamTalk notes that he played “a starring role, off the bench, in Spain’s World Cup final victory, after extra time, over Argentina.” More specifically, “he created the winner with a clever nod-back from a difficult angle in the final to set up Ferran Torres to gleefully rifle home.”

Those moments matter. They reinforce the sense that he can impact major games, even when not starting. They also maintain his market value. Injuries limited him to 20 LaLiga starts last season, but Spain still trusted him, and he delivered.

There is another key point in the report, “the Premier League would appeal to Williams, with Arsenal viewed as an attractive destination”. That does not mean a transfer is imminent. It means Arsenal would not be pushing against a player totally set on staying in Bilbao.

So this is where Arsenal stand. Williams is back in focus, the £77m clause is clear, and the need for a top-class left-sided attacker remains obvious. If Arsenal want a marquee addition, they have one sitting in plain sight.

Our View

From an unconvinced Arsenal fan’s perspective, this report lands somewhere between encouraging and familiar. Encouraging, because Nico Williams is a serious player with the “pace, directness and creativity” this squad lacks at times. Familiar, because Arsenal always seem to be “assess” FC when it comes to these big attacking deals.

You can see the logic. Morgan Rogers gone, Bradley Barcola messy, so now it is Williams again. Fine. But if the club rate him that highly, why is it always a revival? Why does every major attacking target feel like a circle back rather than a decisive strike? At some stage, Arsenal have to stop admiring elite forwards and actually close for one.

The £77m clause is steep, but this is the market. If Arteta wants a left winger who can alter games, then that costs money. The bigger concern is whether Williams solves enough by himself. Arsenal need more unpredictability, yes, but they also need more conviction from the club in these moments.

There is also the usual caution with players coming from Bilbao. Brilliant environment, brilliant coaching, but also a very specific context. Excelling there and excelling every week in England are different tests. Williams looks equipped for it, but fans have heard “serious option” and “fresh contact” before.

In short, good player, sensible target, believable need. Now prove Arsenal can actually get it done.
