Barcelona’s transfer activity is heating up, and Pol Ballus of The Athletic has provided a revealing update on developments inside the club. From goalkeeper reinforcements to attacking ambitions, there’s a clear sense of urgency in Catalonia – albeit complicated by financial realities.
The biggest confirmed move is Joan Garcia. Barcelona have triggered his €25million release clause, with Rastar Group confirming payment. As Ballus notes, “Barcelona officials told The Athletic they ordered the payment of the 24-year-old goalkeeper’s release clause… on Friday last week.” Rastar Group confirmed receipt of the funds the following Monday. The expectation is that Garcia will be installed as first choice, leaving long-time No.1 Marc-André ter Stegen’s future in doubt. Although under contract until 2028, the German could be moved on as he seeks regular minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Sporting director Deco met with the agent of Nico Williams last week. “Barcelona sources told The Athletic the encounter involved the Athletic Club winger’s camp letting them know he would be open to moving to the Camp Nou.” However, other top clubs are also interested, and given Barcelona’s financial limitations, any deal is likely to take time.

Barcelona’s preference remains Luis Diaz. “Barcelona sources insisted their top target in that position is Luis Diaz, although there is a reluctance on Liverpool’s part to sell.” Marcus Rashford has also been mentioned, though his current form and wages may pose obstacles.
The tide has turned dramatically for Frenkie de Jong. Once viewed as a sellable asset, the Dutchman is now central to Hansi Flick’s system. “Flick believes Barcelona have been better with De Jong on the pitch, especially on the ball,” and the stats from their title-winning run support this.
De Jong has always wanted to stay, even when the club tried to move him on. “Now, from a financial and contractual dimension, it makes more sense than ever to keep him around.” Talks over a renewal are ongoing, with both sides optimistic, though there is no rush due to salary cap considerations.
Beyond ter Stegen, several fringe players are up for grabs. “Ansu Fati… has accepted that the best thing for him is to leave on loan this summer.” Pau Victor is also available, with Barca placing a €20million price tag on the promising youngster. “Industry sources told The Athletic that Barca have put a €20million price tag on Victor.”
Pablo Torre could follow a similar route, and while Barca would consider offers for Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, “both players want to stay at the club next season.
From a Barcelona fan’s perspective, this report offers a mixture of optimism and realism. Joan Garcia’s signing signals a significant shift — perhaps even a philosophical one — as the club pivots towards youth, lower wages, and long-term planning. Letting go of Ter Stegen would be emotional, but in line with a squad evolution model that prioritises future value.
Nico Williams feels like the most Barca-style signing of the three wingers mentioned. His directness, flair, and youth fit well with what fans expect. But supporters will also be wary of financial overstretching. The memory of inflated wages and high-risk transfers is still fresh.
The De Jong situation is encouraging. Fans have long wanted clarity and stability around the Dutchman. Flick’s confidence in him resonates — he’s not just a tactical asset but a symbol of continuity in a team undergoing renewal.
There’s also a growing acceptance that some fan favourites may depart. Araujo, for instance, is admired, but financial pressures may make sacrifice necessary. Ultimately, Barcelona fans are pragmatic these days — if selling big unlocks two or three key incomings, they’re willing to back the board.
