There is a familiar rhythm to English football’s transfer ecosystem, where one prolific season can elevate a player from relative obscurity to the centre of a bidding war. According to TEAMtalk, Swansea City striker Zan Vipotnik is now firmly in that space, with Brighton leading a queue of admirers.
The Slovenian forward, described by some scouts as the “new Viktor Gyokeres”, has surged into prominence after a remarkable Championship campaign. It is a label that carries weight, not least because Gyokeres himself followed a similar path, refining his craft in England before exploding into elite European football.

Vipotnik’s journey has not followed a conventional script. From Bordeaux’s collapse to Swansea’s opportunistic free transfer in 2024, his trajectory speaks to sharp recruitment as much as individual development. His first season offered promise, seven goals hinting at potential rather than delivering certainty.
This year has been different. With 22 goals, he has emerged as the Championship’s most potent striker, blending physical presence with sharper movement and a growing composure in front of goal. As one scout noted, “there is a growing belief among clubs that Vipotnik could follow a similar trajectory to Gyokeres.”
Such comparisons are not made lightly. Gyokeres’ rise from Coventry City to Sporting CP, where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances before earning a move to Arsenal, has become a modern benchmark for second-tier breakout stars.
Brighton’s interest feels particularly pointed. This is a club that has built its reputation on identifying talent before it peaks, and their historic link to Gyokeres only adds intrigue. Alongside them, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds, Brentford and West Ham are all reported to have conducted detailed checks.
There is also attention from Sporting CP, a reminder that Vipotnik’s appeal extends beyond England. Swansea, aware of the inevitable, have secured him on a new long-term deal, though this appears designed more to protect value than guarantee permanence.
A recruitment analyst familiar with the situation observed, “This is the stage where Swansea lose control of the narrative. Once the Premier League engages, it becomes about timing and price.”
Swansea’s challenge now is one faced by many Championship clubs before them. Retain a player whose value may never be higher, or cash in and reinvest. The contract extension offers leverage, but not certainty.
Vipotnik’s rise reflects both his own adaptation and the Championship’s enduring role as a proving ground. For Brighton, and others, the calculation is simple. Invest early, trust the data, and hope the next Gyokeres is already within reach.
From a Brighton supporter’s perspective, this feels like a move that aligns perfectly with the club’s identity. Recruitment at Brighton has rarely been reactive, instead it has been about spotting trajectories before they become obvious. Vipotnik fits that model.
There is excitement in the idea of securing a striker who has dominated the Championship, particularly one drawing comparisons to Gyokeres. Yet there is also caution. Brighton fans have seen how adaptation to Premier League intensity can vary, even for prolific scorers.
The presence of multiple Premier League suitors adds another layer. Brighton’s edge has often come from moving early, avoiding inflated fees and crowded negotiations. If this becomes an auction, the value proposition shifts.
Tactically, Vipotnik could offer something different. Brighton have often relied on fluid attacking systems rather than a traditional focal point. His physicality and goal instinct could provide variety, especially against deeper defences.
Ultimately, the appeal lies in potential rather than certainty. Brighton supporters would likely trust the process, but they would also recognise that not every Championship star becomes the next Gyokeres.
