What makes this exciting is the fit. A left-sided defender who is elite on the ball, experienced at the top level, and naturally suited to a back three sounds tailor-made for where Chelsea are heading under Xabi Alonso. Plenty of centre-backs can defend their box. Bastoni looks like someone who can control games, help the team play higher up the pitch, and give real balance in build-up.

Of course, £70m is a huge fee. That part cannot be ignored, especially with Liverpool, Manchester City and Barcelona all hovering. But if Chelsea are serious about competing for the biggest trophies again, then eventually they need to win races like this. Not every top target can be a developmental signing.
