Chelsea’s admiration for Mike Maignan has not disappeared, and according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, it may yet become one of the more significant goalkeeper stories to watch.
The report states: “Chelsea has never forgotten Mike, even if for the moment we are at a simple information phase, let’s call it an in-depth phase.” That phrasing matters. This is not presented as an advanced negotiation, but it does suggest Chelsea are doing groundwork.
Maignan recently extended his AC Milan contract until 2031, but Gazzetta Dello Sport make clear that the renewal does not remove uncertainty. The French goalkeeper reportedly wants two key assurances, Champions League football and the continuation of Massimiliano Allegri’s project.
The article notes: “For Mike, both must be there.” That is the line Chelsea will be watching closely.
At 30, Maignan is not a development signing. He is an elite, proven goalkeeper, a leader, and a player who expects to compete at the top level. If Milan fail to provide that platform, Chelsea may sense an opening.

Chelsea have invested heavily across the squad, yet the goalkeeping position remains an area of scrutiny. Maignan would bring authority, experience, distribution, command, and a proven winning mentality.
Gazzetta Dello Sport also recalls that “There was also a time when the Frenchman had said yes to Chelsea,” before Milan and the Blues failed to reach an agreement. That detail gives this latest interest greater weight. Chelsea have been here before, and Maignan has already shown some willingness to consider the move.
One complication is obvious. The report states: “okay the charm of the Premier League, but the Champions League will not be played in those parts next year.”
That may weaken Chelsea’s hand. Maignan’s priority appears to be sporting ambition, not simply salary or status. If Chelsea are to convince him, they must sell the direction of the project, the level of investment, and the chance to become a defining figure in a young side.
From a Chelsea fan’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of link that should create excitement. Maignan feels like a proper statement signing, not another speculative punt. Chelsea have bought potential for years, but sometimes a team needs grown-up authority in key positions. In goal, Maignan would offer exactly that.
There is also something appealing about his character. The Gazzetta Dello Sport report makes him sound demanding, ambitious, and unwilling to settle for drift. That should not scare Chelsea supporters. It should encourage them. This squad needs more players who expect standards every day.
Yes, the Champions League issue is real. A player of Maignan’s level will want Europe’s biggest stage. But Chelsea can still present a persuasive case. The Premier League remains hugely attractive, Stamford Bridge still carries weight, and the club’s long-term ceiling is high if recruitment becomes sharper.
If Maignan becomes genuinely available, Chelsea should be aggressive. Not reckless, but decisive. Elite goalkeepers change the feel of a team. They calm defenders, rescue points, and set standards. For a club trying to return to the top, Maignan would be more than a signing. He would be a signal.
