Chelsea face a critical window with the club looking to sign a striker, centre back and right footed attacker to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Whilst a striker is the main priority one area which certainly doesn’t need strengthening is midfield, which is arguably the strongest area of the squad.

However, TEAMtalk have reported Chelsea are monitoring Palace star Wharton, but Liverpool and Manchester United are also interested.

The report states Chelsea have been tracking Wharton since he was at Blackburn and their interest in him comes from their desire to build a Premier League winning squad.

TEAMtalk add the Blues may have to make an offer in excess of £60m if they are to have any chance of landing the 21-year-old.

Wharton, who’s preparing for Saturday’s FA Cup final has made 26 appearances for the Eagles this season, but has yet to find the back of the net.

Santos and Essugo arriving in the summer

Chelsea already have Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia on their books, whilst the midfield will be further boosted this summer.

Andrey Santos is set for a key role in the squad after excelling at Strasbourg, whilst the Blues agreed a deal in March to sign Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon.

Both players have a chance of making their debuts at the Club World Cup next month, and their arrival will give Chelsea serious depth and talent in midfield.

Whilst Wharton is clearly talented and has the potential to be a top player, there isn’t exactly space in the squad for him.
