Chelsea are accelerating their move for Pep Chavarria, with fresh negotiations underway between the Premier League club and Rayo Vallecano over a deal for the Spanish left-back. According to Marca, Chelsea are now preparing an improved proposal that could reach €25 million once fixed payments and bonuses are included.
The 27-year-old is understood to have already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, leaving club-to-club negotiations as the final major hurdle. There is growing expectation that talks will continue at pace, with the player keen to secure what is described as a dream switch to the Premier League and the chance to join one of England’s biggest clubs.

The shape of the package now appears central. While Chelsea’s next bid may rise to €25 million including add-ons, Rayo Vallecano could yet push for that same figure as a guaranteed amount. Much may depend on club president Raúl Martín Presa, who is reportedly handling the discussions personally and remains key to whether a compromise is found.
That stance is understandable when placed against the recent background. Rayo are said to have turned down an earlier approach worth less than €15 million, bonuses included, around a week ago. Chelsea have therefore had to move quickly and decisively to keep the negotiations alive.
One notable detail in the report is the player’s own effort to help push matters forward. Pep Chavarria has apparently reduced his salary demands in a bid to smooth the path towards a full agreement. That usually points to a footballer fully committed to the move and eager for the transfer to be completed.
The report also states that Chavarria is an “express request” of Xabi Alonso, who values his ability to operate in multiple roles across the pitch. That versatility will naturally catch attention, particularly in a market where clubs place huge value on adaptable defenders capable of covering more than one function.
From Chelsea’s perspective, this feels like a targeted move rather than a speculative one. Pep Chavarria, Rayo Vallecano and Chelsea are now closely tied in a negotiation that appears to be entering its most important phase. If the structure of the fee can be resolved, the deal may not be far from completion.
As a Chelsea supporter, this is the sort of report that immediately sparks curiosity. Pep Chavarria is not the glamorous, headline-first name many fans might expect, yet those deals can often prove the smartest if the recruitment team believe the fit is right. When a player is pushing to make the move happen, even adjusting his own financial expectations, that usually suggests real conviction.
The interesting part is the fee. €25 million is serious money for a player coming from Rayo Vallecano, so supporters will naturally want to know exactly how Chelsea plan to use him. If he is being signed for his flexibility, energy and tactical intelligence, then the logic becomes clearer. Modern squads need full-backs who can shift shape, protect transitions and offer options in build-up.
There will still be some caution among fans. Chelsea have signed plenty of players in recent windows, and every addition now brings pressure to justify the strategy. A deal like this only truly lands well if the coaching staff have a precise role in mind.
Even so, there is something encouraging about the tone of this report. It suggests Chelsea are acting with purpose, pushing for a specific profile and willing to advance negotiations when they see value. If the club believe Pep Chavarria can raise the level of the squad and offer dependable depth with upside, this may become one of those transfers that looks modest at first and smart later on.
