Liverpool have no intention of parting with Virgil van Dijk this summer, despite fresh interest emerging from AC Milan and Fenerbahce as the defender moves into the final year of his contract. Credit to Gazzetta dello Sport, which reports that Milan are already assessing a future move once the Dutchman becomes available at the end of the season.
The situation is relatively clear for now. Liverpool are planning around Van Dijk for 2026-27 and are prepared to let the final 12 months of his deal run, in keeping with Fenway Sports Group’s long-established approach to senior players. The club did something similar in the past and, after agreeing an extension with Van Dijk in 2025 alongside Mohamed Salah, there is no appetite internally to revisit that commitment by sanctioning a sale at a reduced fee.
Van Dijk is due back later this month after the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign ended in painful fashion. Ronald Koeman’s side were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 16, prompting an emotional response from the Liverpool captain on social media. “As captain, all I ever wanted was to make this country proud. To see our World Cup end so early is heartbreaking because I know how much this team gave every single day,” the 35-year-old said. He added, “Now is about accepting that we failed, and we take full responsibility for it. I’d like to thank our travelling fans and everyone back home who believed in us and stood by us until the end. We saw you, and we felt your support every step of the way.”

Milan’s interest appears tied to a wider rebuild at centre-back. The Italian club have agreed a deal for Mario Gila from Lazio and are also looking at Real Madrid youngster Victor Valdepenas as part of a broader defensive refresh. Within that process, Van Dijk is viewed as a potential market opportunity for 2027, rather than an immediate signing.
There is movement elsewhere in Milan’s back line too. Fikayo Tomori is understood to be available for around £17 million, with questions reportedly raised over whether he fully suits the demands of Ruben Amorim’s new setup.
From Liverpool’s perspective, Van Dijk’s earlier-than-expected return from international duty may prove useful. It gives Andoni Iraola more time with his captain in pre-season and offers the player a cleaner run into a campaign that could be important for both short-term performance and longer-term planning.
Whether this becomes Van Dijk’s final year at Anfield remains to be seen, but Liverpool’s stance is firm. He is staying, he remains central to the squad, and any clubs hoping to prise him away now are likely to be disappointed.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this is exactly how the club should be handling Virgil van Dijk. There are moments in football when numbers and contract dates matter, and there are other moments when authority, standards and presence matter more. Van Dijk still gives Liverpool those things in abundance.
Supporters have seen enough difficult transitions over the past two years. Arne Slot’s spell ended badly, the club has moved again with Andoni Iraola, and the dressing room needs strong voices who understand what elite Liverpool levels look like every single day. Van Dijk remains one of the few players who can set that tone from the first whistle of pre-season.
There is also a football argument beyond emotion. Liverpool may need to refresh parts of the squad, but removing the captain in the same summer would create another huge hole to fill. Experience like his cannot be replaced cheaply or quickly, even if a player is 35.
If Milan want to monitor the situation for next year, that is understandable. For now, Liverpool fans will be glad the message is simple. Keep the captain, let Iraola build with proven leaders, and give this team the best possible platform to push back towards major honours.
