Nottingham Forest are now considered the frontrunners in the pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, as the 24-year-old edges closer to a potential summer exit from Villa Park.
The Midlands side are positioning themselves strongly in a race that includes Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom remain interested but are yet to match Forest’s intent or financial willingness. Forest’s readiness to commit substantial funds and offer European football next season has put them in a commanding position as they seek reinforcements following high-profile departures.
While Villa are reluctant sellers, there is growing acceptance within the club that a bid in the region of £50 million could prompt formal negotiations. Interest in Ramsey has intensified in recent weeks, particularly amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Morgan Gibbs-White’s future at the City Ground.
Forest’s ability to compete financially and sportingly has set them apart from their rivals. Sources suggest that the potential windfall from Gibbs-White’s likely move to Tottenham Hotspur could pave the way for a full-scale pursuit of Ramsey. Spurs are expected to conclude a deal for the Forest midfielder despite recent allegations surrounding an unauthorised approach.
Forest’s ambition to return to European competition has seen them pursue proven Premier League quality, and Ramsey fits the mould of a high-energy, technically adept player capable of making an immediate impact. The club’s hierarchy believe the project under Nuno Espirito Santo offers both playing time and a continental platform – two key factors in the midfielder’s consideration.
Villa are understood to be weighing up their options, knowing that Ramsey has not always been a guaranteed starter under Unai Emery. Despite his academy roots and long-standing ties to the club, there is a sense that the midfielder would be open to a move offering more consistent minutes.
While Everton remain in the conversation and have already added quality this summer, including the arrival of Alex Baena from Villarreal, they may find it difficult to match Forest’s financial muscle. Tottenham have also been tracking Ramsey but their priorities currently lie in finalising the Gibbs-White deal, which could limit their ability to act decisively in the short term.
Much depends on how quickly Forest can move players out and secure funds. Should Gibbs-White’s transfer to north London be finalised swiftly, the club are prepared to table an offer close to Villa’s valuation. There is optimism internally that a deal could be concluded early in the window if all pieces fall into place.
Ramsey’s future now looks likely to be resolved within weeks rather than months, with Forest leading the chase and Villa’s position gradually softening. Despite public claims that they wish to retain the midfielder, the reality is that Villa are prepared to listen if the offer reflects the player’s value in the current market.
