Report: Genoa sack Gilardino, appoint Patrick Vieira | OneFootball

After Roma appointed Claudio Ranieri last week, Genoa are expected to become the second Serie A team to make a managerial change during the international break.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Italy’s oldest club have reportedly decided to part ways with head coach Alberto Gilardino and appoint Patrick Vieira as his successor. The two sides have already agreed to a contract, with the former Inter midfielder ready to take over in the coming days.

Vieira, a former World Cup-winning midfielder with France, will take the reins at Genoa. Vieira most recently managed French side Strasbourg, where he spent the 2023/24 campaign.

The decision comes with Genoa languishing in 17th place in the Serie A standings, just one point above the relegation zone. The club has managed to accumulate only 10 points from 12 matches, a concerning tally for a side eager to maintain its top-flight status.

Though, the news comes as a slight surprise considering il Grifone’s recent uptick in form. The team secured four points from their last two matches, hinting at a potential turnaround.

Gilardino, 42, has been with the club for two years. During his tenure, he led Genoa to promotion from Serie B in the 2022-23 season and successfully guided them to safety in their first season back in Serie A.
