Despite falling behind Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Cristian Romero, Inter are reluctant to give up on their pursuit of the Tottenham Hotspur captain. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, two influential Nerazzurri figures are trying to convince the former Atalanta and Juventus defender to continue his career at the Giuseppe Meazza.
Romero has emerged as one of Inter’s top defensive targets amid a major overhaul. In addition to losing Stefan de Vrij, Francesco Acerbi, and Matteo Darmian on free transfers, the reigning Serie A champions could still part ways with standout center-back Alessandro Bastoni.
Meanwhile, John Stones has joined Inter as a free agent after his contract with Manchester City expired at the end of last season. Stones’ arrival alone won’t be enough to address the shortage of numbers at the back. Therefore, Beppe Marotta remains hopeful of adding Romero to Cristian Chivu’s star-studded squad.
However, that has proved to be a tall order so far.
Javier Zanetti and Lautaro Martinez are reportedly trying to persuade the 28-year-old to return to Serie A. El Toro, who shares the dressing room with Romero on the national team, might be Inter’s best chance to leapfrog Atletico Madrid in the race for his signature.
Romero has established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League since swapping Bergamo for North London in 2021. And there’s little doubt that he would be an immediate upgrade on Yann Bisseck, who has recently extended his contract with Inter.
Yet, Diego Simeone has earmarked Romero as his top target, with Los Colchoneros’ talks with Spurs already in ‘advanced stages.’
