Serie A champions Inter have reportedly set their sights on Genoa defender Leo Ostigard heading into the summer transfer window. According to Calciomercato, the Norwegian star has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Stefan de Vrij at San Siro.

De Vrij’s contract runs out in less than two weeks. However, since he’s currently away on World Cup duty with the Netherlands, Inter must wait for his return to Europe to resolve his future. If the veteran center-back refuses to sign a new contract, they’ll have to dive into the market for a replacement.

Despite playing a marginal role in Cristian Chivu’s system last term, the Dutch ace could still renew his contract with Inter. Yet, it’s not a foregone conclusion. Meanwhile, Yann Bisseck could also be on his way out, with several Premier League clubs vying for his signature after another impressive season.

Therefore, Inter have already started preparing for a defensive overhaul. Ostigard could be a decent option for the Nerazzurri, but his market value may surge after an impressive World Cup start. Indeed, he was on the scoresheet as Norway humbled Iraq 4-1 in their Group I opener.

Our take on Inter & Ostigard

Ostigard faltered in his first Serie A stint, finding little space at Napoli. However, he has grown from strength to strength since returning to Italy’s top flight last summer, establishing himself as a cornerstone of Genoa’s backline.

The 26-year-old made 30 league appearances for the Griffins in 2025/26, netting five goals and adding one assist. In doing so, he cemented his status as one of the highest-scoring defenders in the division.

Meanwhile, Genoa had slapped a €15 million price tag on their star center-back before the tournament. That figure is susceptible to a significant increase if Ostigard continues to impress at the World Cup, which could complicate Inter’s hopes of striking an affordable deal.
