Serie A champions Inter are reportedly accelerating their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri are looking to sign the Argentine star on loan with an obligation to buy.
Inter signed Manuel Akanji from Manchester City in a similar deal last summer. However, it may take a bit more persuading to convince Tottenham to sell their standout center-back. Adding to this sentiment, Spurs have already set a substantial €50 million asking price for the former Juventus and Atalanta ace.
Romero has established himself as one of the most influential figures in Tottenham’s locker room since joining the club in 2021. He has earned the captain’s armband, while it’s worth noting that his contract runs until 2029. On that basis, Inter cannot expect Spurs to let their skipper leave without a fight.
Still, the player’s will could make all the difference. So far, he has been reluctant to discuss his future.
At 28, Romero is at the peak of his powers. He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022 and reach the final this summer. Furthermore, his superb form in the Premier League over the past few years has made him one of the world’s most highly-rated center-backs.
Therefore, he would be a major coup for Inter. Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio appear to be well aware of that. In fact, Romero’s agent was in Milan yesterday, fueling speculation about his potential return to Serie A. Talks could already be underway.
