Atletico Madrid have reportedly leapfrogged Juventus in the race to sign outgoing Manchester City star Bernardo Silva. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Calciomercato, Los Colchoneros are currently in pole position to land the 31-year-old midfielder.
After nine illustrious years at the Etihad Stadium, Bernardo Silva is ready to wave goodbye to Man City. Indeed, his contract is due to expire in June, with the club already announcing his departure at the end of the season. Meanwhile, there’s no shortage of suitors.
Juventus have earmarked the former Monaco ace as one of their top targets for the summer. However, the Turin giants are likely to miss out on his signature as they’re on the verge of finishing outside the Serie A top four. Trailing fourth-placed Roma by two points ahead of the final day, Luciano Spalletti’s men look destined to compete in the Europa League next season.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is reportedly desperate to sign Silva. Furthermore, the Argentine has already urged the club to take all the necessary steps to convince the player to continue his career at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Spalletti remains hopeful of signing Silva. However, that will only be possible if Juventus pull off a miracle on Matchday 38 and secure Champions League qualification. Otherwise, they won’t stand a chance.
As for Atletico Madrid, they’re frantically looking for reinforcements to close the gap on Barcelona and Real Madrid. There’s no doubt that Silva would be a massive upgrade on their current midfield options. As such, Simeone is pressuring the club to bring the Portugal international to Spain.
