The price, around £43.1m, is not small. Yet in the current market, for a 20-year-old winger with Bundesliga production, it is not outrageous either. If Liverpool wait another year and he improves again, that figure could look modest.

The Manchester United link adds spice, naturally, but Liverpool should not treat this as a rivalry transfer. They should treat it as a football decision. Does he fit the system? Can he handle the physical jump? Is his end product repeatable?
