Liverpool Explore Ilya Zabarnyi Transfer Opportunity as Defensive Rebuild Takes Shape

Zabarnyi Offer Adds Intrigue to Liverpool Transfer Plans

Liverpool’s summer planning has taken another intriguing turn, with Dave OCKOP reporting that the club have been offered the chance to explore a deal for Paris Saint-Germain defender Ilya Zabarnyi.

The information, credited to Dave OCKOP, suggests Liverpool’s recruitment team are once again surveying the centre back market with serious intent. That should surprise nobody. Ibrahima Konate’s confirmed departure leaves a significant gap, not merely in terms of bodies, but in pace, aggression, aerial security and experience at the highest level.

Zabarnyi, still only 23, would represent a fascinating profile. He is young enough to develop, experienced enough to contribute immediately, and familiar enough to Andoni Iraola’s methods from their shared time at Bournemouth to make the link feel more than speculative noise.

Iraola Connection Could Matter

Liverpool’s managerial change has altered the mood around several players and potential targets. Andoni Iraola’s arrival naturally sharpens focus on footballers he knows, trusts, or has already improved.

Zabarnyi fits neatly into that category. At Bournemouth, he showed the defensive concentration, recovery instincts and passing simplicity required in a side that wanted to defend bravely and play with tempo. Those qualities would translate well to Anfield, particularly if Liverpool intend to press higher and rebuild their back line with more security behind the ball.

Dave OCKOP reports that discussions remain at an exploratory stage. That distinction matters. Liverpool have not yet committed to a firm pursuit, but they have been made aware of the opportunity. In transfer windows, that is often where serious ideas begin.

PSG Situation Creates Opening

Zabarnyi’s move to PSG last summer was substantial. The French champions paid £54.5 million, with a further £2.6 million in potential add ons, meaning any Liverpool deal would likely require a fee at least matching that outlay.

His Ligue 1 numbers suggest PSG trusted him domestically. Zabarnyi started 26 of his 28 league appearances, establishing himself as a regular presence across the campaign.

Europe told a different story. As Dave OCKOP notes, Zabarnyi managed only seven Champions League appearances and 213 minutes in total. For a defender of his ambition, being part of a winning squad is not necessarily the same as feeling central to it.

“Zabarnyi is thought to be less than fully satisfied with his situation in the French capital,” is the line that gives this story its edge. Players rarely agitate publicly when the right move might be available privately.

Liverpool Face Defining Defensive Decision

Liverpool’s challenge is clear. They need a centre back who can start, compete, and grow. Zabarnyi offers plenty, but price, squad balance and alternative targets will shape the final judgement.

Nico Schlotterbeck’s name remains relevant, despite his Borussia Dortmund renewal until 2031, with Dave OCKOP previously revealing Liverpool’s contact with his representatives. Yet Zabarnyi may prove more attainable if PSG are open to negotiation.

This is not yet a transfer chase. It is a door slightly open. Liverpool must now decide whether to walk through it.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this feels like exactly the kind of report that demands attention without demanding panic. Zabarnyi is not a glamour name in the way some fans crave, but he might be a very Liverpool type of signing, especially if the club believe Iraola can get another level from him.

The Konate departure changes everything. Liverpool cannot afford to enter next season with uncertainty at centre back, especially if the team are being reshaped tactically. Virgil van Dijk still matters enormously, but succession planning cannot wait forever. Jarell Quansah has talent, but Liverpool need proven quality around him, not just potential.

Zabarnyi’s limited Champions League role at PSG is the most interesting part of this. It suggests opportunity. If he feels undervalued, Liverpool can offer him status, responsibility and a league he already understands. That matters.

The fee is the obvious concern. Paying £55 million or more for a player PSG only signed last summer would be a serious commitment. Still, defenders with Premier League experience, elite physical tools and age on their side are rarely cheap.

For me, this is one to watch closely. If Iraola wants him, and Liverpool’s data team agree, it could quickly move from “exploratory” to very serious indeed.
