Liverpool’s January plans are beginning to crystallise and the latest indication points toward an ambitious move for Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. Football Talk cite Spanish outlet Fichajes in reporting that Liverpool are preparing a £70 million proposal for the 25 year old, a significant outlay that reflects both the urgency of the club’s situation and the attributes of the player being monitored.
Semenyo’s profile has grown steadily since his switch to the Vitality Stadium and his form this season has amplified that rise. He has contributed 6 goals and 3 assists so far, numbers that underline his impact during Bournemouth’s sharp start. The report highlights Liverpool scouts being impressed by his pace, power and capacity to break through defensive lines, qualities that align neatly with Arne Slot’s model of direct, fast paced circulation and high pressure work.
Football Talk relay that Semenyo has won 6.2 duels per match, made 5.4 recoveries and averaged 1.6 tackles. These are statistics that speak directly to the off ball demands of Liverpool’s current tactical identity. One source is quoted as saying that Semenyo has been described as “world-class” by Justin Kluivert, and there is a growing argument suggesting the Ghanaian international has developed into one of the league’s most forceful wide forwards.

While Liverpool opened the league campaign with five consecutive wins, results have dipped severely. That downturn has sharpened the focus on squad depth and competition, particularly in wide attacking areas. Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah remain the primary options, but with Salah departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, reinforcement is essential.
Semenyo’s availability during that period is a decisive factor. Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON leaves him free for selection throughout the congested winter fixture list. Liverpool’s technical staff view that as vital, and it strengthens the case for a January acquisition.
Football Talk note that Tottenham Hotspur are also contemplating a move for Semenyo, which may influence the scale and speed of Liverpool’s bid. Given that the club spent more than £450 million last summer on players including Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, a further major investment indicates both pressure and ambition within the recruitment structure.
There is a sense among supporters that Liverpool need more than just tactical refinement after the recent slump. Five defeats in the last six league matches have exposed gaps in depth and resilience, and Semenyo’s name emerging at a £70 million level is a clear signal of intent from the football operations team.
From a fan perspective, Semenyo looks tailor made for Slot’s approach. His straight line speed and aggressive ball carrying would offer something different to both Gakpo and Salah. There is also a feeling that Liverpool have lacked a true disruptor on the flanks across this difficult run. Semenyo’s defensive volume, highlighted in Football Talk’s report, also stands out because tracking back has been a concern on the right side.
There will be obvious debate regarding the price. Seventy million pounds for a player who is still developing his end product will encourage scrutiny. However, Liverpool have paid similar fees for players who fit specific tactical requirements and Semenyo’s adaptability across the front line is attractive.
The fact that he is available during AFCON is arguably the most persuasive point for supporters. Liverpool cannot afford to navigate that period without dynamism in the wide areas. If Semenyo arrives early in January and integrates quickly, he could be the spark Liverpool require to stabilise a season that has drifted far too quickly from the standards of last year’s title triumph.
