There is also a broader point here. Liverpool cannot afford to let central defence drift into a reactive problem. Van Dijk has been such a huge figure that replacing him, whenever that moment comes, is never going to be about finding a like-for-like answer. It is about finding someone capable of anchoring the next era. Bastoni has the standing to at least make that conversation credible.

The fee, of course, would be enormous. Paying around £70 million for a centre-back is a major call, even in this market. Yet top-class defenders in their prime are rare, and Liverpool have already shown they will invest heavily when they believe the profile is right.

What makes this especially intriguing is that Bastoni appears to tick footballing and personality boxes. He looks like the sort of player who could walk into a huge club and handle expectation. That matters at Anfield. If Iraola wants a defender who can build play, defend aggressively and lead, there are not many better options being discussed right now.
