Man City Track Wesley as Roma Face Summer Transfer Test

Manchester City are among the major clubs monitoring AS Roma defender Wesley, with Caught Offside reporting that Barcelona and Real Madrid are also watching the Brazilian closely.

Roma signed the 22-year-old from Flamengo in July 2025 in a deal reportedly worth “around €25 million plus €5 million in add-ons,” and his progress in Serie A has quickly shifted the conversation from potential to premium value.

City interest makes tactical sense

Wesley fits the modern full-back profile. Caught Offside note that elite clubs want players who can “recover quickly, carry the ball, press aggressively, defend one-v-one situations and contribute in advanced areas.”

That explains City’s interest. Pep Guardiola has long valued defenders capable of operating in different zones, especially those comfortable stepping inside, defending transitions and sustaining pressure high up the pitch.

Roma hold strong position

Roma are under no immediate pressure. Wesley is reportedly contracted until June 2030, while Transfermarkt lists his market value at €40 million. Caught Offside add that “Roma could demand significantly more if Europe’s biggest clubs make formal approaches.”

That long contract changes the dynamic. City may admire the player, but this would not be a soft negotiation. Roma know the market, know the buyer profile and know Barcelona and Real Madrid interest could drive value higher.

Premier League battle could grow

Caught Offside also report that “Man City, Newcastle United have all been impressed by Wesley,” while Arsenal and Tottenham have also been linked.

For City, this looks like succession planning as much as short-term recruitment. Wesley offers pace, aggression and upside, but the competition is serious. Real Madrid’s Brazilian recruitment network is well established, while Barcelona’s technical preference for progressive full-backs makes their interest logical, even with financial complications.

The key question is whether City turn monitoring into action. If they do, Roma’s stance will be simple, long contract, elite demand, major fee required.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester City fan’s perspective, this is exactly the type of transfer link that feels believable. Not because every rumour becomes reality, but because the profile makes sense.

City’s full-back recruitment has often been about control, intelligence and positional flexibility. Wesley appears to offer something slightly different too, a more explosive, energetic presence who could help refresh the right side over the long term.

The Barcelona and Real Madrid angle is the part that makes this interesting. If both Spanish giants are involved, City would need to move decisively rather than allow the situation to become a summer auction. Roma holding a contract until 2030 also means there is no obvious bargain to be had.

Still, if the club’s scouting department believes Wesley has the tactical discipline to match his athletic tools, this could be one to watch carefully. City do not need another body for the sake of it. They need a defender who can grow into Guardiola’s structure and possibly outlast it.

At 22, Wesley feels like a player whose best football is ahead of him. That is usually when City prefer to strike.
