Manchester United are assessing options at centre-back ahead of the summer window, with Manchester United identifying Murillo as a leading candidate. Murillo has developed rapidly since arriving at Nottingham Forest in 2023, emerging as one of the Premier League’s standout young defenders. As Daily Mail Sport revealed in December, “Murillo is open to leaving Forest next summer despite signing a new, improved four-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025.” That openness has sharpened interest from elite clubs, United included.
At 23, Murillo combines pace, power and balance, operating naturally as a left-sided centre-back. His partnership with Nikola Milenkovic last season helped Forest push towards Champions League contention, underlining both his defensive assurance and composure in possession. United’s recruitment focus has leaned towards defenders who can handle high defensive lines and aggressive pressing, attributes Murillo has demonstrated consistently.

Forest, for their part, are under no immediate pressure to sell. Signed for £10 million from Corinthians, Murillo is regarded as one of the most astute deals of the Evangelos Marinakis era. His family are settled in Nottingham, yet his performances have kept him firmly on the radar across Europe.
Much may hinge on European qualification. Forest’s route to the Champions League would require Europa League success, while United know their own continental status could strengthen their hand. Should United secure a return to Europe’s top competition, it would materially improve their chances of convincing Murillo that Old Trafford represents the next logical step.
Murillo profiles as the type of defender United should be targeting, young, athletic and already proven in the Premier League. After years of patchwork solutions at centre-back, fans are craving a clear succession plan rather than short-term fixes.
There is also realism here. Murillo would not be cheap and Forest will negotiate from a position of strength. Yet if United are serious about evolving their defensive structure, this is the calibre of signing required. Supporters will be encouraged that recruitment appears proactive rather than reactive, especially with Maguire’s departure looming.
Equally, fans will expect discipline. The club cannot repeat past mistakes of overpaying without a defined tactical fit. Murillo looks like a defender who could grow with the team over several seasons, which is precisely the sort of planning United supporters have been calling for.
