Manchester United and Liverpool are both advancing their interest in Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, with multiple checks underway as both clubs assess suitability and cost, according to TeamTalk.
“Manchester United and Liverpool are both stepping up their interest in Joao Gomes, TEAMtalk understands, with the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder emerging as a major transfer target ahead of the summer window.”

United’s requirement is clear. Recruitment plans include at least one central midfielder, possibly two, as they reshape an area that has lacked consistency. Gomes has entered that shortlist following a series of performances that have caught attention internally.
“United are firmly in the market for at least one new central midfielder – and potentially two – as they prepare for a key rebuild in the middle of the park”
Liverpool’s interest is driven by a different but equally pressing need. Squad planning continues with an eye on long term balance, particularly in the holding role.
“Liverpool are also placing increasing importance on strengthening their midfield this summer, with uncertainty lingering over the long-term futures of Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones. They believe they need more options in the holding role.”

Both clubs have intensified their monitoring process, conducting due diligence on Gomes’ performances, physical output and tactical suitability.
“As a result, both United and Liverpool have been actively monitoring Gomes in recent weeks, carrying out detailed checks on the Brazilian as they weigh up a potential move.”
His recent displays have strengthened that interest. Gomes played a decisive role in Wolves’ wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool, showcasing a blend of defensive awareness and progressive play.
“The 25-year-old’s recent form has only heightened that interest. Gomes has been instrumental in Wolves’ impressive Premier League victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool, delivering commanding displays that have underlined his potential to top clubs.”

The situation is further complicated by growing competition.
“However, the race for his signature is far from a two-horse contest. We can reveal that Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have also made enquiries as they track his development.”
There remains a layer of nuance around the player’s preference, which could influence negotiations if multiple offers materialise.
“Gomes may have already dropped a hint about where he ideally wants to play, though, and it could be bad news for United.”
That hint is rooted in a previous statement.
“Asked if he would play for Liverpool or if he prefers another Premier League team, Gomes said: “Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have a great desire to play there.”
While views can evolve, such comments are rarely overlooked during recruitment discussions. Liverpool’s project and style may align closely with Gomes’ profile, though United’s rebuild offers a different appeal.
Internally, Wolves are preparing for the possibility of a sale under the right conditions.
“Sources also indicate that, while relegation-threatened Wolves are hopeful of retaining key talents such as Mateus Mane, as previously reported, there is an acceptance behind the scenes that Gomes is likely to move on this summer if the right offer arrives.”
Gomes remains focused on immediate priorities, including international ambitions.

“Despite the growing transfer noise, Gomes remains fully focused on his immediate objectives. The midfielder is determined to secure his place in the Brazil national team squad for this summer’s World Cup finals.”
With demand rising and performance levels sustained, his valuation is expected to reflect both scarcity and competition.
From a Manchester United perspective, Gomes fits a clear need. Supporters have watched an inconsistent midfield struggle for control in key matches. The appeal lies in his energy, ball recovery and capacity to cover ground. There will be concern, however, about competition driving up the price and whether United can move decisively in a crowded market.
Liverpool supporters may interpret this differently. The idea of reinforcing the holding role carries weight, particularly given the physical demands of their system. Gomes offers intensity and structure, attributes that align with what Liverpool require. His past comment about wanting to play at Anfield will resonate, even if circumstances have evolved.
Both fanbases will recognise the wider picture. Interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham introduces a level of complexity that could shift negotiations quickly. For United and Liverpool, this becomes a test of strategy, timing and conviction.
The outcome may hinge less on desire and more on execution.
