Manchester United transfer news: Yan Diomande scouting ramps up after RB Leipzig price drop

Manchester United are weighing up a January move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, according to a report from TeamTalk. The key talking point is a sharp swing in his expected price, plus a clear trigger linked to rival activity. United’s winter windows often reward speed and preparation, and this situation reads the same way, stay ready, then act quickly if the market forces your hand.

Semenyo chase fades, Diomande becomes Plan A

United made contact for Antoine Semenyo over the summer, and ultimately chose Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo instead. With Semenyo now tied to a Bournemouth contract that reportedly includes a £65million January clause, United have revisited the idea. TeamTalk add that Manchester City are in advanced talks and look poised to win the race.

That context matters because Sky Sports describe United as ‘one of the clubs monitoring Leipzig’s Diomande’. Monitoring can sound passive, and it is often the groundwork for a fast bid when the dominoes start falling.

Price drop and market trigger

For Diomande, the headline is value. Earlier whispers had his cost at €100m, and Sky Sports now suggest he can be signed for €60m to €70m. It is still a serious fee for a 19 year old, and it moves the conversation from fantasy to feasibility for a club that has leaned into age profile and upside.

The on pitch numbers make the interest easy to understand. Seven goals and four assists in 16 matches is a proper breakout, and a hat trick against Eintracht Frankfurt is the sort of performance that puts a name on every shortlist. There is also an international subplot, Diomande is currently alongside United’s Amad Diallo, which creates an obvious narrative around familiarity, even if the real work is done by scouts and analysts.

TeamTalk’s own update from December 26 adds that United have spoken to Diomande’s camp in recent weeks. The complication is Leipzig’s stance, they are expected to do all they can to keep him in January and beyond, which often means demanding a premium or shutting talks down early.

This is where Sky’s condition becomes decisive. United are expected to ‘accelerate their interest in Diomande’ if rivals ‘start moving for the forward in this window’. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also ‘tracking his development closely’. If one of those clubs advances to concrete talks, the pace of this story changes quickly.

Fit under Amorim, risk and reward

Ruben Amorim is into his second season in charge, and the squad is still being shaped towards speed and directness in wide areas. Cunha and Mbeumo add quality, and United still need reliable one versus one threat and end product when matches tighten.

Diomande has been compared to a young Kylian Mbappe, comparisons carry noise, and they hint at the explosiveness scouts see. Leipzig’s Marcel Schafer calling him an ‘outstanding talent’ and a ‘young jewel’ also signals how highly they rate him. As one recruitment source put it to me recently, “January rewards clubs who act before panic sets in.” For United, the decision is simple, move early and pay, or wait and risk losing him.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As a Manchester United supporter, this report hits all the right notes. Amorim has been laying foundations since day one, and now in his second season you can see an identity, higher tempo, clearer pressing triggers, and braver passing into the forward line. Add a winger like Diomande and it feels like the final piece for turning decent performances into ruthless wins.

Seven goals and four assists in 16 games at 19 is elite production for a wide forward learning a top league, and that hat trick against Frankfurt screams big game mentality. The link with Amad is a bonus too, you want players arriving who already understand each other’s movements, even if it is only at international level.

The price update is the real hook. If €60m to €70m is accurate, it becomes a deal United should push hard for, especially with PSG and Bayern ‘tracking his development closely’. We have watched rivals win races too often. If City take Semenyo, fine, let them, United should be hunting the higher upside option for Amorim’s system.
