Manchester United eye Tosin Adarabioyo as defensive concerns grow before transfer deadline

Manchester United are assessing whether to make a late move for defensive reinforcements after an alarming opening-weekend defeat sharpened focus on the squad’s weaknesses. According to Give Me Sport, the club are considering entering the market for a centre-back and have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

Michael Carrick’s side began the new campaign with a damaging 2-0 loss away to Hull City, a result that immediately heightened scrutiny around a back line that already looked short of certainty. With Champions League football back on the agenda, United’s recruitment team had initially centred much of their summer work on midfield reshaping after Casemiro’s exit. That process has brought three arrivals, including Carlos Baleba in a £70 million deal from Brighton.

Attention may now switch again, this time towards the defence.

Centre-back options under discussion

The latest information points to United actively exploring solutions in central defence. It is understood that the club “are looking at centre-back options” and have “discussed Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis, 24, internally”. That detail is significant because it suggests a live conversation inside Old Trafford rather than a loose scouting check.

Tosin Adarabioyo has also entered the conversation. United “have also been offered Chelsea’s Tosin, 28, as a potential squad player to help give Carrick more depth”. That wording matters. The suggestion here is not of an automatic starter, but of an experienced addition who could provide cover in a department lacking reliability.

There is also mention of Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old is admired and “on the club’s radar”, but Chelsea consider him “untouchable”. Given his versatility across the back line and growing standing under Xabi Alonso, any deal there appears extremely difficult in the time remaining.

Squad depth issues exposed early

United’s defensive concerns were evident long before the trip to Hull. Harry Maguire signed an extension earlier this year, but at 33 there remains an obvious medium-term need to refresh that area. Matthijs de Ligt is still working back from a serious back problem, while Lisandro Martinez’s availability continues to invite concern.

Beyond them, Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro are talented but still learning. In those circumstances, a late-market centre-back search feels logical, even if the timing is far from ideal.

The left side of defence has complicated matters further. United had wanted stronger competition for Luke Shaw and spent time assessing Lewis Hall, yet “Newcastle won’t sell”. That has left the club chasing alternatives late in the window and without the flexibility they might have created had a left-back been secured earlier.

There has even been “talk of Baleba playing that role in desperate situations”, which underlines the extent to which United are still trying to piece together cover in key areas.

Transfer deadline pressure builds

From United’s perspective, the next few days look important. Tosin Adarabioyo may appeal because he is experienced, available and could arrive as a practical short-term fix. Taylor Harwood-Bellis appears a more strategic option, while Acheampong would represent the most ambitious and complicated pursuit of the three.

The central point is clear. After a 2-0 defeat to Hull City and with major fixtures approaching, Manchester United’s defensive planning remains unfinished. Whether Tosin becomes the answer or simply one name among several, the club’s late search for a centre-back now feels very real.

As a Manchester United supporter, this report feels familiar in all the wrong ways. The need for a defender did not suddenly appear after losing 2-0 at Hull City. Everyone could see the squad looked light at centre-back and left-back before the season even kicked off, so why are United only now scrambling through names like Tosin Adarabioyo and Taylor Harwood-Bellis?

Tosin might be decent cover, but if the idea is that he arrives as “a potential squad player to help give Carrick more depth”, then that says plenty about the level of ambition. United should be signing players who genuinely improve the first XI, not simply patch holes created by another slow window.

The Josh Acheampong link sounds attractive, but if Chelsea think he is “untouchable”, that one looks unrealistic. It risks becoming another name used to show activity rather than a deal with substance behind it. Harwood-Bellis is more believable, though supporters would still ask why the club waited until the final days.

The Lewis Hall pursuit sums it up. If “Newcastle won’t sell”, why was so much time allowed to drift there? That delay has left Luke Shaw carrying too much responsibility again, and United talking about emergency fixes. After years of uneven squad building, fans are entitled to be sceptical. A late signing may help, but it would not change the feeling that this has been reactive rather than properly planned.
