Maguire Offered to Inter Milan as Defensive Rebuild Takes Shape

Harry Maguire has reportedly emerged as a surprise name on Inter Milan’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window, but the Serie A champions appear focused on other defensive priorities as they prepare for a significant squad overhaul.

According to the original source, Football Italia, the Manchester United centre-back has been offered to Inter Milan through intermediaries from England. However, while Maguire’s availability has caught the club’s attention, the Nerazzurri are not currently treating a move for the experienced defender as a priority.

Inter Milan are entering a period of transition at the back. Veteran defenders Francesco Acerbi and Matteo Darmian are expected to leave when their contracts expire at the end of June, while Stefan de Vrij could also move on. There is also uncertainty surrounding Yann Bisseck, who has been linked with a lucrative transfer to Bayern Munich.

Those potential departures have forced Inter Milan to assess the market carefully, but their focus appears to be elsewhere despite Maguire being made available.

Maguire Faces Uncertain Manchester United Future

Maguire’s situation at Manchester United has become increasingly intriguing. The England international signed a one-year contract extension earlier this season, keeping him at Old Trafford until the end of the 2026-27 campaign. Nevertheless, speculation surrounding his future continues to gather momentum.

At 33, Maguire remains one of the Premier League’s most recognisable defenders. His experience, leadership qualities and aerial dominance still make him an attractive option for clubs seeking proven performers.

Yet there is a growing belief that Manchester United could be willing to sanction his departure if a suitable opportunity arises. The defender was recently omitted from England’s World Cup squad, adding further uncertainty to what could be a pivotal summer in his career.

A move abroad would offer Maguire a fresh challenge and potentially a different tactical environment. Italian football has often provided experienced defenders with an opportunity to extend their careers, thanks to the league’s emphasis on organisation, positioning and game intelligence.

Solet Remains Priority Target

Despite the links with Maguire, Inter Milan are reportedly concentrating their efforts on securing the signing of Udinese defender Oumar Solet.

The French centre-back has emerged as the club’s preferred defensive target as they look to strengthen Cristian Chivu’s squad following an impressive campaign. Chivu guided Inter Milan to both the Serie A title and Coppa Italia during his first full season in senior management, creating expectations that the club will continue to build aggressively.

Several other names have also been discussed internally. Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic has long been admired by Inter Milan, but reports suggest his current club would prefer to wait until after the World Cup before considering any sale, hoping his value could rise further.

As a result, Solet currently sits at the top of Inter Milan’s defensive shortlist, leaving Maguire as more of a secondary option rather than an immediate transfer objective.

Summer Window Could Still Bring Twist

Transfer windows rarely follow a straightforward script, and that means Maguire’s name cannot be ruled out entirely. Inter Milan’s priorities could shift depending on player departures, transfer fees and negotiations elsewhere in the market.

If De Vrij departs and Bisseck is sold, the club may find themselves needing additional defensive reinforcements beyond their primary targets. In that scenario, a player with Maguire’s pedigree and experience could become a more attractive proposition.

For now, though, the signs point towards Inter Milan pursuing alternative options. Football Italia reports that while Maguire has been offered to the Italian giants, they are “not in a position to prioritise” a move for the former Manchester United captain at this stage.

Whether that stance remains unchanged throughout the summer remains to be seen. Transfer markets have a habit of creating unexpected opportunities, and Maguire’s future is likely to remain a talking point until the window closes.

For the moment, Inter Milan appear focused on younger targets, while Maguire waits to discover whether his next chapter will be written at Old Trafford or elsewhere.
