Reports in Italy claim that Scott McTominay spoke to his former Manchester United teammate Rasmus Hojlund over the phone this weekend in an attempt to sell the idea of a move to Napoli this window.

Napoli are still on the lookout for a new striker to replace the injured Romelu Lukaku, who is expected to miss around three to four months of the start of the Serie A campaign, and reports in Italy indicate that Hojlund remains Napoli’s no.1 target.

Football Italia confirmed earlier on Sunday that the Partenopei are hoping to bring in Hojlund and Eljif Elmas before the window slams shut in just over a week’s time.

The Partenopei have reportedly opened up to the possibility of signing Hojlund on loan with an obligation to buy rather than an option, with updates from Corriere dello Sport claiming that an offer of a €5m loan deal with a mandatory buy option for an additional €40m could be enough to convince Manchester United into selling.

Corriere dello Sport adds that reigning Serie A MVP McTominay called Hojlund on Saturday to discuss a potential move to the Stadio Maradona.

The Scot and the Dane spent one season together at Old Trafford in 2023-24, prior to McTominay joining Napoli, where he has enjoyed an unprecedented career resurgence.

The issue for Napoli and Hojlund is still connected to personal terms according to recent reports. Outlets in Italy claim that Hojlund had requested a salary in the region of €6.5m per season while in negotiations with Milan, and that that figure is also expected to be too high for the Partenopei.
