Newcastle Transfer News: Cody Gakpo Interest Signals Summer Intent

Gakpo Links Raise Bigger Newcastle Question

Newcastle United’s reported interest in Cody Gakpo feels like the sort of story that belongs at the start of a defining summer. According to CaughtOffside, the Magpies are among the clubs monitoring the Liverpool forward, whose future at Anfield is said to be uncertain after a difficult 2025-2026 campaign.

Tottenham are reportedly ahead in the race and willing to pay around £60m, a figure that would make any pursuit serious rather than speculative. Newcastle, though, being in the conversation matters. It points towards ambition, but also towards need.

After finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, Eddie Howe’s side cannot afford another window of good intentions and mixed results. They need players who immediately raise the level, sharpen the attack and restore a sense of momentum.

Liverpool Uncertainty Could Open Door

Gakpo’s situation is intriguing because he remains a player of obvious quality. Described as “elite”, the Dutch international has shown flashes of technical elegance, intelligence between the lines and the ability to operate across the front line.

Liverpool’s likely desire to reshape their attacking options this summer may leave Gakpo vulnerable. If new arrivals push him further down the order, then a move could become logical for all parties.

Yet that does not make it simple. At £60m, Newcastle would not be buying potential alone. They would be buying expectation. Gakpo would arrive needing to influence games quickly, not merely fit into a longer development plan.

Howe Needs More Than Names

The wider issue for Newcastle is not simply recruitment, it is integration. The original report rightly notes that players such as Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade struggled to make the desired impact during 2025-2026.

That matters. Signing good footballers is one part of rebuilding a side. Creating a structure in which they thrive is another.

For Howe, the question is whether Gakpo would be given the platform to look like the player who once seemed so composed and dangerous at Liverpool. Would he play from the left, drifting inside? Would he be used centrally? Would he complement the striker, or compete with him?

Those details will decide whether this is smart planning or another expensive gamble.

Summer Window Carries Huge Pressure

Newcastle need reinforcements across the pitch, not only in attack. A stronger forward line helps, but it cannot cover structural weaknesses elsewhere.

Still, Gakpo would be a fascinating statement. He is Premier League tested, technically refined and still capable of becoming a major figure in the right environment.

For Newcastle, this summer is about more than adding talent. It is about rediscovering direction.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Newcastle fan’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of link that excites and worries you at the same time.

Gakpo is a serious footballer. You can see the quality. He is smooth in possession, clever with his movement and versatile enough to give Howe different attacking shapes. If Newcastle are serious about climbing back up the table, they need players with that kind of ceiling.

Yet the £60m figure is the part that makes you pause. After a poor season, Newcastle cannot spend big simply because a player has a strong reputation. They need certainty, or at least something close to it.

The concern is whether Gakpo solves the most urgent problem. Newcastle need pace, creativity, depth, defensive stability and better balance. If the budget is limited, every major signing has to be close to perfect.

There is also the Howe factor. If he stays, he has to get more from new arrivals than he did last season. Gakpo could be brilliant, but only if there is a clear plan.

This would be an ambitious move. It could also become a defining test of Newcastle’s recruitment maturity.
