Newcastle United’s search for defensive reinforcements appears to be gathering momentum, with the Daily Mail reporting that Atalanta full back Marco Palestra has emerged as a leading target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 21 year old has enhanced his reputation following a productive loan spell with Cagliari and is now attracting significant interest from across Europe. For Newcastle, the timing of that emergence feels particularly relevant as uncertainty continues around the future of Tino Livramento.

Newcastle’s recruitment team are understandably preparing for every scenario. Livramento remains highly regarded at St James’ Park, but with two years remaining on his current deal, discussions over his long term future are becoming increasingly important.
The departure of Kieran Trippier has also left a leadership and experience gap within Eddie Howe’s squad. Finding a player capable of developing into a long term solution at right back is therefore a priority.

Palestra’s profile appears to fit Newcastle’s recruitment model, young, ambitious and already gaining valuable top flight experience.
Securing a deal will not be straightforward. Manchester City, Arsenal and Inter Milan are all monitoring the Italian defender, while Liverpool have also been linked.
Inter may represent the strongest threat. Reports suggest they are preparing a substantial offer as they consider life after Denzel Dumfries.
Newcastle’s challenge is clear. Without Champions League football, convincing elite prospects to choose Tyneside ahead of Europe’s established giants requires a compelling sporting vision.
Speaking from Italy’s training camp, Palestra made his ambitions clear:
“I’ve always felt ready. I want to thank Cagliari and the coach Pisacane for my first season as a starter in Serie A. Now I’m focused on these two games and starting over with Italy.
“For next season, I hope to grow and improve even more, to fight for even higher goals.”

Those comments will only fuel interest from clubs seeking emerging talent. Newcastle’s admiration is understandable, but converting that admiration into a transfer may prove one of their tougher assignments this summer.
For Newcastle supporters, this report makes plenty of sense. The club have built much of their recent success around identifying players before they become unattainable, and Palestra appears to fit that strategy perfectly.
There is also a practical element to this pursuit. Livramento remains a hugely important player, but Newcastle cannot afford to be reactive in the market. Planning ahead has become a key strength under the current ownership structure and identifying potential successors before a situation develops is smart business.
Palestra’s comments suggest a player eager to challenge himself at a higher level. That mentality should appeal to Newcastle fans who have watched the club recruit ambitious young talents capable of growing alongside the project.
Competition from Inter Milan, Arsenal and Manchester City is naturally concerning. Any player attracting interest from clubs of that calibre is likely to command a significant fee and plenty of attention.
However, Newcastle still have a strong story to tell. Eddie Howe has a proven record of developing young players, the atmosphere at St James’ Park remains one of the best in Europe and opportunities for regular first team football can be more attractive than sitting on the bench elsewhere.
If Newcastle truly view Palestra as a priority target, supporters will hope the club act decisively before rival interest turns admiration into regret.
