There is also something encouraging in the way this report reads. Newcastle are clearly active, clearly reviewing multiple targets and clearly trying to strengthen with purpose rather than panic. Soule, Fernandez-Pardo and El Khannouss are different names, but they all point towards a strategy of adding youth, technical quality and long-term value.

The Sunderland angle will catch attention across the North East, of course. Supporters will naturally enjoy the idea of Newcastle stepping into a race and having the pull to win it. Yet the bigger point is whether Soule can improve Jaissle’s squad. On that front, the answer looks promising.
