Real Madrid are preparing for significant defensive changes as they consider parting ways with two key players, David Alaba and Éder Militão. According to Imre Himmelbauer of FootballTransfers.com, the Spanish giants have grown concerned about the injury records of the duo and are ready to entertain offers in the upcoming summer transfer window. Both defenders have been pivotal for Real Madrid in recent years but now face uncertain futures due to long-term injuries. Alaba, a versatile defender who arrived on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2021, has impressed but has struggled with fitness, particularly following a cruciate ligament tear last year. Similarly, Militão, brought in from Porto in 2019 for €50 million, has become a reliable performer when fit but is plagued by recurring knee injuries.
One of the names reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar is Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender, 33, is in the final months of his contract with Liverpool and remains one of the most sought-after players despite his age.
Marca has described Van Dijk as a “dream reinforcement” for Real Madrid. The 78-times capped Netherlands international is renowned for his leadership, aerial dominance, and ability to read the game – attributes that would undoubtedly appeal to Carlo Ancelotti’s side. However, with reports suggesting that Liverpool are keen to retain their talismanic centre-back, Madrid may face a battle to secure his services.
Jonathan Tah, the 28-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender, is also a potential target for Los Blancos. Tah’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and his consistent performances in Germany have drawn interest from multiple European heavyweights, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The decision to offload Alaba and Militão stems largely from fears over their long-term availability. Militão’s repeated knee issues raise significant doubts about whether he can maintain his current performance levels. Similarly, Alaba’s age and recovery from a serious cruciate ligament injury put his future at the elite level under scrutiny.
While both players have contributed immensely to Real Madrid’s success, football at this level leaves little room for sentiment. The injuries to both defenders have disrupted the club’s stability at the back, prompting them to explore options for reinforcements.
Real Madrid’s reported interest in Van Dijk and Tah signals their intent to rebuild a formidable defensive unit. However, whether these plans materialise depends on their ability to navigate complex transfer negotiations and fend off competition from rival clubs.
Real Madrid’s pursuit of Jonathan Tah, in particular, could be challenging, given that Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the Germany international. Barcelona’s need for defensive depth aligns with their reported interest, while Bayern’s longstanding admiration for Tah adds another layer of complexity.
Similarly, Van Dijk’s availability remains uncertain. While his contract situation at Liverpool provides an opening, the Reds are unlikely to let their defensive stalwart leave without a fight. Liverpool’s determination to keep Van Dijk emphasises his importance to Arne Slot’s current plans.
For Real Madrid, any move for these players would represent both ambition and pragmatism as they aim to shore up their defensive frailties ahead of the new season.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the idea of Virgil van Dijk heading to Real Madrid is unsettling but not entirely surprising. At 33, Van Dijk remains a colossus at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. His contract negotiations may have opened a door for speculation, but most supporters will be confident that the club understands his irreplaceable value.
Under Arne Slot’s leadership, Liverpool have shown resilience and a clear vision for the future. Losing Van Dijk would undoubtedly be a setback, not just for his defensive qualities but for the leadership and stability he brings to the squad. Slot has made strides in revitalising Liverpool’s tactical setup, and Van Dijk has been integral to this transformation.
Real Madrid’s admiration for Van Dijk is a testament to his enduring class. However, fans will hope that Liverpool’s ambition matches that of the Spanish giants. The recent rebuilding under Slot suggests that Liverpool are unlikely to let their star defender leave without exploring every avenue to keep him.
While Jonathan Tah may be a tempting option for Madrid, Liverpool fans can take solace in the fact that their club remains an attractive destination for top talent. Van Dijk’s legacy at Anfield is already cemented, and most supporters will hope that he chooses to extend his stay, continuing to guide Liverpool’s defence through the next chapter of their evolution.
