Earlier this week, it was brought to light that Real Madrid have begun to accept that their squad planning for the long-term project had ‘failed’.

Now, AS confirms in a recent report that Los Blancos have made critical decisions on the squad planning for next season and that massive changes are expected.

The Real Madrid team that will enter the 2026-27 campaign will have a completely new look and the summer transfer window will be an important one.

Managers and administrators agree that some changes are required and they will not hesitate come June.

The big moves

The central defence and midfield are Real Madrid’s biggest priorities ahead of the summer transfer window and their goal is to bring in one or two centre-backs and at least one midfielder in June. Those are the positions they are most concerned about.

Their idea is to bring in players who think with the ball at their feet – an attribute they see to be lacking in the current squad.

After all, they are in dire need of a game controller and players who can help the team maintain dominance and cohesion on the field.

Real Madrid’s transfer strategy will involve targeting players both below and above the age of 20, and they will thus have eyes on all potential target groups.

The idea, however, is to spend fees on players below 20 and look for players above that age only if they can arrive on a free transfer.

Vitinha very much a part of the plans

Vitinha remains an exception to that condition. The PSG and Portuguese international has long been linked with Real Madrid, and he continues to be a target for the summer.

But the presence of PSG is a massive hurdle in Real Madrid’s pursuit of a player who can be a genuine difference maker. For a move to happen, the player and his camp will need to shake things up, which appears unlikely.

As such, Real Madrid are looking for a younger profile and admire Kees Smit whom they have already been maintaining tabs on for several weeks now. He stands out as a target who is a young midfielder who has a high ceiling.

It remains to be seen how drastic and ruthless Real Madrid are in the summer, for there is s serious need for a change in the dressing room. Florentino Perez’s decisions in the summer, thus, may make or break the team’s future.
