Serie A giants Roma have reportedly identified Chelsea flop Alejandro Garnacho as a genuine transfer target. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine winger is open to joining the Giallorossi, but there’s a catch.
Chelsea signed Garnacho from Manchester United last summer for a reported fee of £40 million. The Blues had hoped to help the 22-year-old steer his faltering career back on track. Instead, Garnacho’s downfall hit a new low in West London.
Despite making 24 Premier League appearances, the versatile forward found the net just once, though he did register four assists. Nevertheless, his overall performances did little to justify Chelsea’s investment, casting further doubt over his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
New manager Xabi Alonso has put Garnacho on the chopping block, with Roma emerging as one of the likeliest destinations for the former Napoli target. However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side must overcome a huge stumbling block if they’re to lure the player to the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma would ideally sign Garnacho on loan with an option to buy. That sharply contrasts with Chelsea’s idea of immediately recouping their investment. Indeed, the Blues are eager to offload their misfit permanently in the coming months.
Yet, Roma can bank on the player’s alleged desire to continue his career in Serie A. Despite being on the cusp of tying Paulo Dybala down to a new contract, Gasperini could use another option in attack.
Matias Soule could be on his way out, and Roma could replace the ex-Juventus forward with another Argentine star. Garnacho may have flopped at Chelsea, but Gasperini has built a reputation for getting the best out of struggling players, making this a gamble worth taking.
