Roma’s £20m Bid Puts Jadon Sancho’s Old Trafford Future Under the Spotlight

Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho appears to be edging closer to an Old Trafford exit, with Roma reportedly tabling a £20 million offer for the 25-year-old winger.

According to Simon Peach of The Independent, Sancho’s time at United has been far from the fairytale many expected when he joined from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million in 2021. In four seasons, he has made just 83 appearances and scored 12 goals – a stark contrast to the form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

“Roma have made an offer worth in the region of £20million for Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho,” Peach reported, highlighting the Serie A club’s interest as United look to move him on this summer.

From Scapegoat Row to Chelsea Exit

Sancho’s struggles reached a tipping point in September 2023 when he claimed on social media that he had been made a “scapegoat” by then-manager Erik ten Hag. The post followed Ten Hag’s claim that Sancho had not reached the “level” required to play against Arsenal.

He later returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan, before spending last season at Chelsea. That spell was cut short when the Blues paid £5 million to cancel their obligation to sign him permanently for £25 million.

Amorim’s Squad and United’s Wider Transfer Moves

The winger is currently without a squad number and was one of five players left out of Ruben Amorim’s pre-season group as United seek to move them on. Marcus Rashford has already joined Barcelona on loan, while United are still trying to finalise exits for Antony, Tyrell Malacia, and £50 million-rated Alejandro Garnacho.

Sancho’s Career at a Crossroads

At 25, Sancho is entering what should be his prime years. A fresh start in Serie A could reignite his career, but it’s clear that his chapter at Old Trafford is all but closed. Roma’s £20 million offer, if accepted, would represent a substantial financial loss for United – but perhaps the clean break both parties need.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United supporter’s standpoint, the Jadon Sancho situation is one of the more frustrating transfer sagas in recent memory. When Sancho arrived for £73 million, there was genuine excitement about finally landing the long-coveted winger who lit up the Bundesliga. Four years later, the numbers tell their own story – 83 appearances, 12 goals, and far too many spells out of the squad.

Fans will remember the “scapegoat” comments as a breaking point. Some sympathised, feeling he’d been harshly treated, while others saw it as unprofessional. What most can agree on is that Sancho never truly recovered from that public fallout.

The Chelsea loan looked like an opportunity for redemption, but even that ended early. Now, with Roma offering £20 million, United are faced with a decision: cut their losses or hold out for a higher bid. Many supporters would accept the deal, reasoning that his wages and lack of impact make a sale the most logical move.
