Tottenham Hotspur could have signed Santiago Gimenez in the January transfer window.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Lilywhites tried to secure a deal for Gimenez in the final days of the winter window.

However, the Mexican had already reached an agreement with AC Milan and so snubbed a move to Tottenham.

Gimenez joined the Serie A giants for a reported €32 million fee and he has scored in both his league outings so far.

But missing out on the 23-year-old is unlikely to bother Spurs, who went on to sign Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich.

The French star has made an impressive start to life in the Premier League.

Manager Ange Postecoglou gave him first league start in Sunday’s win over Manchester United. The 19-year-old didn’t receive a lot of service but he looked lively and intelligent in the game.

Tel forced more than one save from Andre Onana. He had 44 touches in the match and boasted 0.72 expected goals.

The young forward also completed 100% aerial duels and registered a key pass.

Tottenham were low on confidence after back-to-back losses to Liverpool and Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup respectively.

However, they bounced back to pick up a narrow victory against United to ease pressure on Postecoglou.

James Maddison was the star performer for Tottenham, scoring the winner in the 13th minute.

Maddison missed nearly four weeks with a calf injury but made an immediate impact on his return for Spurs.

The latest result means the north Londoners have climbed to 12th in the standings with 30 points.

They will now take on Ipswich Town in an away match at Portman Road on Saturday.
