Granit Xhaka to Stay at Sunderland as Chelsea Interest Fails to Shift Black Cats Stance

Sunderland appear to have made their position crystal clear on Granit Xhaka. According to BBC Sport, the Black Cats captain is expected to remain at the Stadium of Light this summer despite serious interest from Chelsea.

The situation looked as if it might develop quickly. Xhaka, now 33, was understandably drawn to the idea of working again with Xabi Alonso after their title-winning spell together at Bayer Leverkusen. Chelsea tested Sunderland’s resolve with an £8m offer, and that bid was rejected. That matters, because it tells you this is not a negotiation Sunderland are entering lightly, if at all.

More importantly, Sunderland sources say Xhaka is “not for sale” and that, after talks, he has recommitted himself to the club. That is the key point. Plenty of transfer stories drag on because one side wants out and the other side wants a premium. This does not read like that, at least from Sunderland’s end.

Xhaka Transfer Latest Points to Firm Sunderland Position

Chelsea may still believe there is room to manoeuvre. Their side of the story is that the former Arsenal midfielder remains open to a move to Stamford Bridge. Fine. Clubs often cling to that hope. The issue is whether they are prepared to pay enough, and whether Sunderland have any reason to sell a player so central to what they are building.

On the evidence of last season, they do not. Xhaka played 34 Premier League matches as Sunderland finished seventh and reached Europe for the first time in 53 years, qualifying for the Conference League. For a promoted side trying to establish itself, losing the captain after that kind of campaign would be an odd message to send.

Sunderland Captain Central to European Push

Xhaka’s influence was obvious from the moment he arrived from Leverkusen. He brought order, edge and experience. Sunderland benefited from all three. This is a player with nearly 300 appearances for Arsenal, a Bundesliga title on his record, and the authority that comes with being Switzerland captain.

He is currently away at the World Cup, where he has featured in every match of Switzerland’s run to the last 16. That only reinforces the point. Sunderland are not dealing with a fading name, they are dealing with a high-level performer under contract until 2028.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As Sunderland fans, this is exactly the sort of update we wanted. Keep it simple, if you are trying to push forward as a club, you do not sell your captain for £8m after he helps drag you into Europe. That would be nonsense.

Xhaka changed the feel of this team. You could see it every week. Better game management, more bite in midfield, more standards across the pitch. Young squads need that, especially one stepping into a European campaign. We have spent years watching Sunderland try to rebuild properly, and this would have felt like the wrong kind of old mistake.

If Chelsea want him, that is flattering. It also tells you Sunderland signed someone with real pedigree and real value. But there is a difference between interest and leverage. Right now, Sunderland hold the cards, and they should.

The biggest positive in this report is not just that the club rejected a bid, it is that Xhaka has reportedly reaffirmed his commitment. That gives supporters something solid to cling to. We are not talking about sentiment here, we are talking about ambition. Keeping your best leaders is how clubs move from a nice surprise to something more serious.

Europe is coming to Wearside. The captain should be there for it.
