Barcelona moved ahead of the curve to sign English attacking star Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United just before the World Cup.
It now appears that the Catalan club’s interest in the talented forward is based on much more than his ability to provide speed from the wing.
His performances at the World Cup have shown several qualities that could make him an interesting option for Hansi Flick’s squad.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona had already identified a number of strengths in Gordon’s game which have become very apparent during the tournament.
His ability to combine with teammates, attack space, create chances and contribute defensively have all strengthened the case for the club having made this signing.

One of Gordon’s main qualities is his ability to connect with teammates near the penalty area.
Rather than simply staying wide and waiting for the ball, he can move into dangerous zones and help create numerical superiority around the opposition defence.
Flick wants attacking players who can understand space and combine quickly, and Gordon’s willingness to move between wide and central positions could give the team another way to break down opponents.
His passing has also caught attention. Gordon can move inside from the wing, attack deeper areas and then find the best available option.
His assist for Kane’s second goal against Congo is the perfect example of all these qualities, as Gordon drifted in, combined well and made the perfect decision to release a pass to the Bayern striker.
There is also the obvious weapon of Gordon’s pace. Against Mexico, he recorded the highest speed of any player at 35.7 kilometres per hour, while his acceleration also helped him win a penalty.

Barcelona have often lacked a direct threat capable of attacking open spaces at speed.
Gordon would offer something different, especially in matches where Flick’s team have opportunities to counterattack rather than dominate possession close to the opposition box.
Just as importantly, the English winger has shown a willingness to work without the ball.
His pressing, intensity in duels and defensive recovery were particularly visible against Mexico after his team were reduced to ten players.
The combination of all this is what makes Gordon such an exciting prospect for Hansi Flick. The German manager would love to work with such a player.
Gordon will be an important signing for Barça and, with every passing day, he makes so much more sense as a systemic fit.
It remains to be seen how he fares in his first season at the Catalan club.
