West Ham appear set for another significant squad decision this summer, with reports suggesting Niclas Füllkrug is preparing to move on after a difficult spell in east London.
According to Sky Sports, AC Milan will not trigger the €5 million option to make his loan move permanent, meaning the German striker will return to West Ham for the time being. However, the expectation is that his stay will be brief.

The 24 time German international has endured a frustrating campaign, one shaped by injuries, limited opportunities and uncertainty over his future. For a player who arrived with a strong reputation after spells in the Bundesliga and a move from Borussia Dortmund, the return has fallen short of expectations.
West Ham invested heavily when they signed Füllkrug in 2024, paying €27 million with potential bonuses pushing the figure higher. Yet the return has been modest.
In 29 competitive appearances for the Hammers, he scored three goals and registered two assists. Injuries proved particularly damaging, causing him to miss more than 30 matches and preventing any sustained momentum.

His temporary move to Milan also failed to reignite his fortunes. Despite making 20 appearances, he started only three matches and finished with one goal.
The latest reports indicate that clubs in Italy, Spain and MLS are monitoring the situation closely. Interest has also emerged from Germany.
Werder Bremen, where Füllkrug enjoyed some of the best years of his career, are believed to be exploring a possible reunion. Initial discussions have reportedly taken place, although any deal remains at an early stage.
At 33, Füllkrug still possesses qualities that could appeal to clubs seeking experience and leadership in attack. What he needs most is continuity, something that has been missing throughout the past year.
West Ham’s willingness to accept a reasonable fee may help accelerate negotiations. From the club’s perspective, reducing a substantial wage commitment while reshaping the squad makes obvious sense.
This was a transfer that simply never found its rhythm. There was genuine excitement when Füllkrug arrived. His reputation in Germany, combined with his physical presence and experience, suggested he could provide a reliable focal point for the attack.
Unfortunately, injuries prevented supporters from seeing the best version of him. Every time he appeared ready to build momentum, another setback seemed to arrive. It became difficult for both player and club to establish any consistency.
Many West Ham fans will probably feel a degree of sympathy. Füllkrug’s commitment was rarely questioned and there were moments that hinted at what he might have offered over a full season. Those moments were simply too infrequent.
Looking ahead, most supporters will view a departure as the sensible outcome. West Ham need to refresh the squad and invest in players who can contribute regularly. The wage savings alone could create room for important additions elsewhere on the pitch.
There is also an acceptance that some transfers do not work despite good intentions on all sides. If Füllkrug secures a move where he can play regularly and enjoy the final years of his career, many West Ham fans would wish him well.
The focus now shifts to recruitment. Expectations remain high among supporters, who will want the club to reinvest wisely and build a squad capable of climbing back to the Premier League.
