Chelsea’s links to right backs continue, despite the fact that Blues have two senior options ready and one really promising youth player in that position.

Maybe it’s because Reece James can’t be trusted to stay fit, or because Enzo Maresca likes him in midfield and plans to use him there more. Maybe it’s because Malo Gusto is struggling to live up to the promise of his first 6 months. And as it stands, Josh Acheampong isn’t getting a sniff even when both are out, as we saw to our disappointment yesterday.

Either way, it seems those in charge still want more options in that position, with CaughtOffside today claiming that long term target Denzel Dumfries is still on our radar. Way back in 2022 we were really strongly linked with him, but since then things have gone pretty quiet.

Now Inter are said to want €50m for him, and that just sounds impossible to us. Our sporting directors may consider breaking their rules for an exceptional talent or a bargain price, but 28 year old Dumfries at €50m is neither of those things.

Of course we can’t rule it out entirely, but unlike in 2022, this move doesn’t fit at all with what we’re trying to do at the club now, and sounds more like an agent trying to talk up a move for a client which even Inter don’t seem to keen to keep.

He signed a new deal in November, and is a first team regular for the Italian giants, so he’s not going cheap. This one is just hard to square at a price Chelsea would pay.
